Cheyenne's Holiday Season Happens on a Few Downtown Blocks

October 15, 2026

Most of Cheyenne's 2026 holiday season takes place on three Saturdays, at addresses on or near 15th and 17th streets. Santa sits at 300 E. 17th Street. His horses are at 15th and Pioneer. The elves take letters at 15th and Thomes. Those three stops run on December 5, 12 and 19, and they are the core of Visit Cheyenne's Old West Holiday program.

The three Saturdays are not interchangeable. Two of them also have the winter farmers market at the Depot in the morning and the Conservatory of Lights at the Botanic Gardens in the evening. The middle Saturday swaps both of those for a 21-and-over Santa run. So for a family, choosing a date mostly comes down to what else is on that day.

The Stops, in Walking Order

The Saturday hours differ by stop, so here is the downtown loop as Visit Cheyenne lists it for each of the three Saturdays:

  1. Photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus at the Whipple House, 300 E. 17th Street, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  2. Meet Santa's Horses at Kringle Ranch, 15th Street and Pioneer Avenue, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  3. Letter Writing with Santa's Elves at Chronicles Post & Station, 15th Street and Thomes Avenue, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  4. Pony Express Pick-Up, also at Chronicles Post & Station, at noon and 2 p.m.

Kringle Ranch closes an hour before the other two, and the Pony Express rides only twice a day. That puts some limits on the order. If you start at the horses in the late morning and walk to Chronicles in time for the 2 p.m. pickup, you still have time for the Whipple House before 4.

What These Buildings Were Before December

All three stops are in buildings with long histories of their own. The Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office says the Whipple-Lacey House was built in 1883 by I.C. Whipple, an early Cheyenne banker, entrepreneur and stockman. It later became the home of Judge John W. Lacey. The office describes the style as a "Modernized French Villa" with Victorian elements, and the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 15, 1980.

Kringle Ranch is a seasonal setup inside the Cheyenne Livery Stable. Visit Cheyenne's listing describes a warm barn with horse visits and photos, and admission is free. For the kind of December day Cheyenne can have, the warm barn matters.

Chronicles Post & Station is the holiday letter operation run with Chronicles Distilling. The Visit Cheyenne listing explains how it works. Kids write a letter, the Postal Elf stamps it, and Pony Express riders collect the letters at noon and 2 p.m. and take them to the U.S. Post Office. The letters go through the real mail system, so the letter-writing stop has a little more to it than a photo backdrop.

Which Saturday You Pick Matters

On December 5 and December 19, the Cheyenne Winter Farmers Market runs at the Cheyenne Depot from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. On those same two evenings, the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens holds its Conservatory of Lights in the Shane Smith Conservatory from 5 to 7 p.m.

Winter Farmers Market at the Depot, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Yes No Yes

Running of the Santas, 21+ No Yes No
Other listings Cowboy Christmas Market at The Event Center at Archer Buffalo Ridge Elementary Craft Show The Sunkicks at the Civic Center, 8 p.m.

On December 5 and 19, a family can go to the Depot market in the morning, walk the Santa loop around midday and see the Conservatory lights after dark, all in one day. The Botanic Gardens event page says the lights are free, but you need a ticket for a timed entry. Time slots can't be refunded or rescheduled, so book the same evening as your downtown day. This is the event's fourth year inside the conservatory. It comes with hot cocoa and a scavenger hunt, and it is all indoors.

December 12 is aimed at a different crowd. The Running of the Santas is a fun run and bar crawl through downtown for ages 21 and up. Registration opens at 3 p.m. at Railspur, 707 W. Lincolnway, and the race starts at 4. The Santa loop still runs that morning, and the Buffalo Ridge Elementary Craft Show is that day at 5331 Pineridge Ave. There is no Conservatory evening on the 12th.

The Parade Starts It All Early

The downtown season opens a week before December. The Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce presents the 36th Annual Cheyenne Christmas Parade on Saturday, November 28, at 5:30 p.m. in downtown Cheyenne, and this year's theme is "Believe in the Magic." Visit Cheyenne calls it Santa's grand debut and the official kickoff of the Old West Holiday.

The same day, the Heroes and Harmony Holiday Market is at Little America. The winter farmers market at the Depot runs one Saturday earlier, on November 21.

On Tuesday, December 1, the Old West Holiday Passport and Map go live. The passport follows Santa's trail through Santa Stops, and visiting them enters you in the Santa Stop Sweepstakes. Visit Cheyenne has a pre-sign-up option on its Old West Holiday highlights page. The passport makes the most sense paired with the Saturday loop, since several stops sit on the same streets.

Weeknights Move Indoors

Between the Saturdays, most of the season happens on stages. Cheyenne Little Theatre Players are staging "Nuncrackers" at the Historic Atlas Theatre on December 4 to 6, 10 to 13 and 18 to 20. Shows are at 7 p.m. with 2 p.m. matinees, and tickets run $19 to $29, according to the Wyoming Tribune Eagle's local events calendar.

The Cheyenne Civic Center has a run of touring holiday shows:

  • A Celtic Christmas by A Taste of Ireland, Wednesday, November 25, 7:30 p.m., doors at 6:30. Cheyenne Presents lists the date, and the local calendar says prices vary.
  • Nutcracker! Magical Christmas Ballet, Monday, November 30, 7 p.m., doors at 6. The calendar lists tickets at $37 to $92.
  • World Ballet Company's The Nutcracker, Friday, December 4, 7 p.m., with tickets at $52 to $117.
  • The Sunkicks: Home for the Holidays, Saturday, December 19, 8 p.m., doors at 7.

Two Nutcracker productions play the Civic Center four days apart, at different price levels. The Conservatory also opens on weeknights, on Thursday, December 3, Friday, December 4, and the Wednesdays and Thursdays of the next two weeks, plus December 23 and 26. If December 5 or 19 is already booked, a weeknight slot gets you the lights without the Saturday crowd.

Past the Downtown Blocks

A few dates take the season out of downtown. The Cowboy Christmas Market runs December 5 and 6 at The Event Center at Archer, 3801 Archer Parkway. In Pine Bluffs, "Christmas at Home" is Monday, December 7, at 708 Lawson St. Visit Cheyenne's listing includes a chili and soup supper, a parade, a holiday bazaar and Santa.

Santa's last public appearance is at the airport. The send-off is Sunday, December 20, starting at 9:30 a.m., with pancakes, treats and cocoa, and Santa leaves at 11 a.m. sharp.

Still to Be Announced

As of mid-October, several pieces of the season are still unposted:

  • The parade route is listed as "Coming Soon."
  • The Historic Governors' Mansion is closed while staff decorate for its annual Tinsel Through Time Christmas exhibit, and Wyoming State Parks says it will reopen in November. No 2026 exhibit dates have been posted yet.
  • The Santa Stops business list on Visit Cheyenne's site is still last year's. Its passport is dated December 7 to 20, 2025, and the 2026 list of participating businesses has not been released.
  • The Holiday Lights Trolley ticket page lists December evening tours but gives no year and says dates may change.

Once those details are out, they will fill in around a schedule that is already set. The Santa loop on 15th and 17th streets runs December 5, 12 and 19 from 10 a.m., and the Conservatory's free timed tickets are open now.
